Nampula, Mozambique – The province of Nampula is positioning itself as a major rice production and processing hub with the backing of significant Libyan investment. This initiative follows a recent meeting between Nampula Governor Eduardo Abdula and Libyan Ambassador to Mozambique Saleh M.M. Elbuaishi.
Abdula stated that the partnership, which draws on Libya’s experience in Gaza province, could transform Nampula’s agricultural sector. The province’s government is now tasked with identifying and evaluating areas with high agricultural potential for the investment, with districts such as Moma, Larde, Mogincual, and Liúpo already on a preliminary list.
The governor emphasized that job creation for local residents is a key priority of the project. While the investment amount remains undisclosed, Ambassador Elbuaishi described it as an “open budget” program, highlighting its importance to the Libyan government.
The project is designed to have a production capacity of up to 600 tons of rice per day, aiming to satisfy domestic demand and create a surplus for export to neighboring countries. A technical visit by Libyan partners will follow the provincial government’s assessment of potential investment sites and local populations.
