President William Ruto has embarked on a diplomatic mission to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), seeking to deepen bilateral ties and secure crucial investments for key Kenyan projects. A key focus of the visit is the expansion of Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network, with the UAE potentially playing a significant role in extending the line to connect with neighboring Uganda and South Sudan.
“As part of the plan, we have agreed to conduct a feasibility study over the extension of the SGR due to its capacity to foster regional integration and promote trade,” President Ruto announced via X. This ambitious project aims to enhance regional connectivity, facilitate trade flows, and unlock the economic potential of East Africa.
Beyond infrastructure development, the Kenyan delegation is exploring UAE investment in the country’s agricultural sector, particularly the flagship Galana-Kulalu irrigation project. This ambitious initiative, managed by the National Irrigation Authority, seeks to enhance food security by boosting agricultural production.
The visit also witnessed the signing of the Kenya-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), a landmark deal aimed at simplifying trade procedures, encouraging industrialization, and boosting Kenyan exports. This agreement is expected to significantly increase exports of Kenyan produce, including fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers, to the UAE market.
President Ruto’s visit underscores Kenya’s strategic shift towards attracting foreign direct investment and fostering public-private partnerships as a key driver of economic growth. By minimizing reliance on external borrowing, the Kenyan government aims to accelerate economic development and improve the livelihoods of its citizens.
The discussions with UAE leadership mark a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral relations and exploring mutually beneficial opportunities in key sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, and trade. The success of these initiatives will have a profound impact on Kenya’s economic trajectory and its position as a regional leader in East Africa.
