Rwanda Secures Chinese Funding for Mega-Irrigation Project

Kigali: Rwanda has secured a concessional loan from China to fund the construction of a major irrigation project in Gisagara District, a move aimed at boosting agricultural production and enhancing food security.

The Giseke Dam and Irrigation Project, expected to benefit over 915 households, will irrigate 2,640 hectares of land, significantly increasing agricultural output in the region known for its rice cultivation.

“This project will significantly contribute to the sustainable transformation of agriculture, as outlined in our National Strategy for Transformation,” said Finance Minister Yusuf Murangwa at the signing ceremony.

The project aligns with the government’s efforts to enhance agricultural resilience to climate change by promoting water-saving technologies and increasing irrigation water productivity.

Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda, Wang Xuekun, emphasized the significance of the project within the framework of the 10 Partnership Action Plans proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping for China-Africa cooperation.

“This project marks a further realization of the important consensus reached between the heads of state of China and Rwanda,” Ambassador Xuekun stated.

China has been a key development partner for Rwanda, providing substantial support in sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare. The current portfolio of Chinese-funded projects in Rwanda, comprising concessional loans and grants, is estimated at $600 million.

The Giseke Dam and Irrigation Project is expected to play a crucial role in advancing Rwanda’s agricultural modernization and enhancing its food security. While the specific timeline for the project’s commencement remains to be determined, a feasibility study will be conducted to assess the project’s scope and determine the most effective implementation strategy.

This development underscores the growing strength of the China-Rwanda partnership, with both countries committed to deepening cooperation across various sectors for mutual benefit and shared development.
